No. Indigenous and Non Indigenous people come to my workshops. Anyone can paint in the Indigenous format, however, if you are not Indigenous you cannot sell the painting as Indigenous. Do you have to be Indigenous to go to one of your workshops? No - you can purchase my paintings at any time. If you email me with what you want, we can organise payment of the item by cheque, money order or direct deposit, and once the money is cleared, the artwork will be delivered to you directly. If you are local I deliver the paintings personally. If you live outside Brisbane I can organise delivery. The delivery costs for outside Brisbane are quoted to you prior to delivery. Do you only sell your paintings at exhibitions? I have been painting all my life. However, I have been painting in my current format since the age of 56. I have made the decision to paint the stories of my people, and tell of the beauty and wonder of Aboriginal culture, by committing these stories to canvas. How long have you been painting? There is about 100 hours of painting associated with a painting like Creation of the Rainbow Serpent. I would spend about a month preparing to paint. This involves deciding what I am going to paint and doing research on the content of the painting, choosing a canvas to size and having it made for me, and then finally setting the design in my mind to commit to canvas. Some artists like to use a visual diary and put down what they are going to paint as a pencil sketch in a book. I don’t like doing this; I have the ability of working all of that out in my head. Once I have the image in my head, I don’t stop painting until it is finished. The painting always comes out like I imagine, sometimes just a bit of a tweak at the end is needed, but not much. Does it take long to paint one of your big paintings – like ‘Creation of the Rainbow Serpent’ I like to use acrylics when I paint, because they dry quickly. I only paint one painting at a time. Once I have my design set in my head, I have to commit it to canvas immediately. Using acrylics allows me to do this. What sort of paint do you use? |
